LA MAISON

La maison (house), Michala Julínyová, year, 20’

In an uninhabited family house, a younger generation re-enacts the ritual ceremonies performed by their elders. Oscillating between extreme solemnity and masquerade, it is a relationship to familial, cultural and historical heritage that is depicted here. The incongruous actions of the protagonists are countered by the stubbornness of the camera, which captures them in an infinite cyclic movement.

Michala Julínyová

Michala Julínyová was born in Slovakia and lives and works in Paris. She is a member of the research unit Contemporary Art and Historical Temporalities (ACTH) at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, France. Her works were shown and performed mostly in France, but also in Italy, Kosovo, and Slovakia during exhibitions, events or festivals. She uses combinations of video, sound, performance, sculpture, installation and drawing to explore the relationship of humans to their history and environment. She constructs metaphorical scenes and forms through the interaction with specific sites, chosen on the basis of their cultural and political stratification. Her performances create poetic images that unfold through a sequence of movements, sounds and words in which the staging of bodies – human or animal – comes to the fore. Through the prism of Slovak culture, the artist explores the tension between past narratives and contemporary issues.
